Description: An emergent approach to organizational strategy making assumes that few organizations actually realize the goal of deliberative, top-down strategic planning, and that effective strategy making occurs on a continual basis and is a shared activity of the entire organization. This innovative book provides the first in-depth look at how real organizations are formulating and implementing strategic change under this new paradigm.

The authors have dug deep into three large and varied organizations (Hewlett-Packard, the California State University system, and the County of Los Angeles) and identified each one's efforts to develop a new strategic planning process better-suited to match the current pace of change and environmental unpredictability. The book is filled with vignettes, quotes, and real-world examples that illustrate the trend toward faster, more adaptive strategic planning processes. It is relevant for a wide range of business, governmental, and non-profit settings, and should be reguired reading in any course on strategic planning.

Comment(s): " Thinking Strategically in Turbulent Times is a remarkable account of what strategic planning really looks like in today's complex, rapidly changing environments. Providing an intimate view of the planning experience of senior leaders in three diverse organizations, Glassman, Zell, and Duron show how strategic planning is an emergent process driven by intuition, constant dialogue, and reflexive action. For educators, this book will bring a vital dose of realism to the classroom; for executives and consultants, it will shed light on what many experience as a murky, perplexing process." -- Thomas G. Cummings, Professor and Chair, Department of Management and Organization, University of Southern California

"Glassman, Zell, and Duron bring to life the realities of strategic planning by taking us inside three mega-organizations in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors as they struggle to anticipate, cope, adapt, and create their own futures. For anyone interested in understanding strategic planning in action, and not merely in theory, this is a must read." -- Kimerly B. Boal, Trinity Company Professor of Organizational Studies and Strategic Management, Texas Tech University

"Going way beyond buzzwords, Thinking Strategically in Turbulent Times shares valuable insights from a fascinating variety of organizations--ranging from major corporations and the military, through universities, government agencies, and rock bands. It shines welcome light on how well-known leaders create strategy, providing an inside look at the process of how big decisions are made. A strong and needed contribution to the strategy field." -- James Allen Distinguished Professor of Strategy and Organization, Northwestern University

"CEOs and corporate board members undertaking strategic planning do not lack conceptual models or consultants. What they often lack is nuanced experience. This wise book invites the reader on a vicarious journey with three instructive organizations struggling with strategic change. It provides rich insight into the challenges associated with contemporary strategic planning." -- Andre L. Delbecq, McCarthy University Professor, Santa Clara University

Review(s): "Clearly written, this book provides fine case studies and will be useful to students and practioners. ...Highly recommended. Upper-division and undergraduate through professional collections." -- Choice
