Comments/Reviews Description: This handbook is designed to help researchers, journalists, students, and business people to locate the rich array of Washington institutions and organizations that focus on issues pertaining to Central Asia and the Caucasus region, particularly in the post-Soviet period. Washington's status as a major repository of documentation on every aspect of the region is strong and growing daily. Beyond the Library of Congress, which intensively collects newspapers and other published materials from the region, and the Foreign Broadcast Information Service, which does the same for radio, there are hundreds of national and international public, non-profit, and private organizations and institutions in Washington with extensive links to Central Asia and the Caucasus, all of which maintain active archives and collections. The Guide includes more than 270 entries. It describes the structure and scholarly and technical resources of libraries, archives and manuscript repositories, museums and galleries, collections of sound and visual recordings, map and film collections, and the holdings of research centers and information agencies. Academic programs and departments of the metropolitan area's many institutions of higher learning are covered, along with international organizations, U.S. and foreign government agencies, association and advocacy groups, scientific organizations, publications and media operations, bookstores and online resources. An Organizations and Institutions Index enhances the Guide's usefullness. Selected Contents:
Comment(s): "An impressive effort to collate highly useful information on the large array of institutions in the Washington area that are involved in research on Central Asia and the Caucasus. This region has in recent years gained in international visibility and attention, so the publication of this volume is both timely and helpful. The information is detailed, well organized, and up-to-date and will tremendously facilitate future research." -- Johannes F. Linn, former Vice President, World Bank, Europe and Central Asia Region "September 11 put the Silk Road countries on the map for most Americans for the first time, but they know almost nothing about this important region. All the more reason why this volume is so valuable. Here the reader will find background information on all of the Washington-area institutions that study or deal with the region. The Guide will be of help to practitioners and scholars alike." -- Charles William Maynes, President, Eurasia Foundation "A new and immensely valuable resource for both specialists and non-specialists seeking contacts and information on Central Asia - -a region now in the center of the map of U.S. security concerns." -- Nancy Lubin, JNA Associates Review(s): Recommended... Choice ...provides a useful pathfinder to hundreds of useful resources on Central Asia and Caucasus studies kept by some 270 institutions... American Reference Books Annual, Vol. 37 |
