Description: This study focuses on measuring and analyzing the changes that have occured in the distribution-related aspects of China's economy over a critical seven year period of reform and transition to a market system. It is based on two national survey of household income in China -- in 1988 and 1995 -- prepared and carried out by the research team. Using this data leading Chinese and Western economists explore a wide range of aspects of the rapidly changing income distribution, including increasing inequality and its causes, urban wages, the gender earnings gap, rural migration, income distribution and food security, and more.

Review(s): ...it does provide an excellent collection of research results, which will be useful for those interested in income distribution in general and the problems of growing income inequality in China in particular. Those doing research on so-called transitional economies will also find it useful. Recommended for libraries supporting research collections in the areas of economic development, comparative economic systems, and political economy. Choice
