Comments/Reviews

Description: This volume contains 250 biographies of women active from 1912 until 1990, although many of the biographies include information current to 2000. In addition to biographies of internationally famous Chinese women, the editor was also able to include a far greater range of women than would have been previously possible because of the enormous amount of historical material and scholarly research that has become available in the last few decades.

These are Chinese women who have forged careers as scientists, businesswomen, sportswomen, and military officers appearing alongside writers, academics, revolutionary heroines, politicians, musicians, opera stars, film stars, artists, educators, nuns, and traditional good wives, as well as women from minority nationalities. They include women from mainland China and Taiwan as well as those of Chinese descent who were born overseas. More than eighty authors and translators from all over the world have contributed to this impressive and indispensable scholarly undertaking.

Review(s): ...another major contribution produced under the experienced and knowledgeable direction of editors-in-chief Lily Xiao Hong Lee and A.D. It constitutes a major contribution to the knowledge and understanding of the fields of Chinese and women's studies. ... Indubitably, academic libraries affiliated with programs in Chinese and/or women's studies at both the undergraduate and graduate levels should have this fine work in their collections. Feminist Collections (v.24,nos. 3-4)

...many of the entries are the result of original research and will form the only substantial information on women available in a Western language. ...this is a well-produced and welcome book. ...likely to remain the standard source on the lives of twentieth-century Chinese women for some time. Reference Reviews Vol. 18 No. 1

...the editors have produced an exceedingly accessible and easy-to-use volume that includes over 250 biographies of individual women...the volume is an invaluable resource for scholars interested in the study of women, gender, and Greater China in the modern period. It is a welcome addition and will prove to be a useful tool for research and teaching for years to come. Pacific Affairs Vol. 76 No. 4

The Biographical Dictionary of Chinese Women is encyclopedic...destined to become a major reference work for years to come...The entries in the Biographical Dictionary of Chinese Women are highly readable...combining full biographic detail with succinct and sometimes wry commentary. The Dictionary is superbly organized, consistently well written and very easy to use. The China Journal, No. 52
